Radioisotopes Production facility

Introduction

The Radioisotope Production Facility (RIPF) is one of the main facilities of the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) . RIPF contains hot cell banks to produce several radioisotopes e.g. (99Mo/99mTc, 131I and 192Ir) isotopes by using the Neutron Activation technology. These banks are provided to produce a high quality of radioactive materials for both medical and industrial uses.

Uses

These products are used in nuclear medical applications for both diagnosis and therapy, and in addition to industrial field including Non Destructive testing (NDT).

Main Radioisotope Produced

Iodine-131(Solution/ Capsule) is most commonly used in the treatment and diagnosis of thyroid gland diseases.

Technetium-99m (Solution) is used in a wide range of medical applications. It is used to image the whole body imaging, brain, thyroid, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, gall bladder, bone marrow, salivary and lacrimal glands, heart, infection and numerous specialized medical studies.

Iridium -192 (discs) is used for industrial field in NDT applications

Facility

This facility includes 131I, 99 Mo, 192 Ir banks in addition to  the preparation, Quality Control and Biology Laboratories; each bank has hot cells for production process that has been built with highest standards complying with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) rules .

131I bank:  includes five hot cells which are two for production and three for cutting, dispensing and packaging process.

MO-99, Tc-99m bank : includes two hot cells, one for cutting and another for dissolution process; in the following of this production area, Solvent extraction system is being located close to hot cells at bank for TC-99m Extraction.

This bank is designed for any future expansion through the introduction of more hot cells.

Quality Control

Quality control is provided to inspect the quality of radioactive products; this involves the determination of both  Radiochemical  and Radionuclides  purities  . In addition to biological and sterility tests to validate and release final Products according to WHO, JFDA , EU Pharmacopeia and IAEA rules.
