Senate Energy Committee Visits Jordan Research and Training Reactor

Amman, July 15 - The Senate Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, headed by Senator Farouq Al-Hiyari, visited the Jordan Nuclear Research and Training Reactor on Tuesday at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) campus to learn about the reactor's most important uses, applications, and operational mechanism.

During the visit, the committee met with the Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Khaled Toukan, who gave a detailed presentation on the establishment of the 5-megawatt Jordan Nuclear Research and Training Reactor. Toukan explained that the reactor is considered the cornerstone of nuclear technology in Jordan and a fundamental pillar for building and developing trained and qualified human capacities, fortified with the nuclear culture and skills necessary for the safe, sound, and efficient operation of nuclear and radiological facilities.

He explained that the reactor serves as a national center for research and training, working to develop technologies for the optimal use of nuclear applications in the fields of laboratory testing, radioisotope production, materials analysis, and research and development.

The reactor director, Dr. Majd Al-Hawari, gave a detailed presentation on the uses of the Jordanian nuclear reactor. For research and training in several fields, including hospitals and scientific research.

For his part, Al-Hayari emphasized that the research reactor is an advanced global platform for scientific research and training, contributing to the development and advancement of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in scientific, economic, and technical aspects. This is because it was established in accordance with international standards and those of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, the government agency responsible for regulating and licensing the safe use of nuclear and radioactive materials and nuclear facilities.

During the visit, the delegation inspected the reactor facilities, the training and educational center, the medical radioisotope manufacturing and production units, and the facility for processing low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste.

At the conclusion of the visit, the attending committee members praised the efforts and achievements made in operating the Jordan Nuclear Research and Training Reactor, emphasizing the importance of supporting this national institution.
