Operational Safety

The Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) fully complies with national regulations and applicable international standards to ensure the highest levels of nuclear safety. This commitment is demonstrated through strict adherence to approved operating procedures that govern all aspects of reactor operation.

To support safe and efficient operation, the Directorate of Safety and Licensing conducts a range of comprehensive nuclear safety analyses. These include neutron, photon, thermal-hydraulic, and mechanical evaluations related to the implementation of new experiments—particularly those involving the irradiation of new materials in the reactor core. Such analyses are essential to verify that proposed activities meet all applicable nuclear safety requirements and regulatory limits.

Additionally, the Directorate conducts fuel burnup calculations to ensure the safe operation of the reactor following the loading of fresh nuclear fuel into the core. These calculations confirm that post-refueling operations remain within the safety limits defined in the reactor’s operating license.

As part of continuous safety oversight, the Directorate regularly reviews and analyzes operational data and compares it against established safety limits. This supports the continued operation of the reactor in accordance with the conditions and requirements approved by the national regulatory authority.

Furthermore, the Directorate reviews incidents, near misses, operational events, and safety-related nonconformities. Where necessary, investigations are conducted, root causes are identified, and technical feedback and recommendations are provided to management to support corrective actions and continuous improvement.

The Directorate also supports other departments by performing specialized assessments and simulations in areas such as dispersion analysis, shielding design, and activation analysis, including the calculation of induced activity levels.
