Personal Radiation Exposure Monitoring at the Jordan Research and Training Reactor
The Jordan Research and Training Reactor places utmost importance on the safety of its personnel through a comprehensive system for measuring, tracking, and monitoring both internal and external radiation exposure.
External radiation exposure monitoring for radiation workers at the reactor relies on the following:
Use of Electronic Personal Dosimeters (EPD), which are utilized by radiation workers upon entering radiation-controlled areas. The EPD device determines work-related radiation exposure and provides real-time external exposure readings.
Use of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dosimeters, distributed every three months to each radiation worker and any employee with frequent access to radiation-controlled areas.
Use of portable external contamination monitors by the Radiation Protection Team to supervise specific tasks.
Use of external contamination monitors at the exits of radiation-controlled areas.
Use of task-specific personal dosimeters for activities requiring special monitoring.
Internal radiation exposure monitoring for radiation workers at the reactor relies on the following:
Performing in-vivo bioassay using a Whole Body Counter (WBC) to detect all measurable radioactive nuclides.
Direct thyroid scans for individuals handling radioactive iodine.
Performing in-vitro bioassay for individuals likely to have been exposed to significant amounts of specific radionuclides or following incidents involving internal contamination.
Analyzing airborne radioactive activity by sampling air in radiation-controlled areas and measuring radionuclide concentrations.
